A 29-year-old from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation faces charges including assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest after a chase that police say spanned over four kilometers and took them through a swamp.
According to RCMP, officers from the Virden detachment were called to a home on Sioux Valley Dakota Nation at about 2:30 PM on July 2. They allege a man had entered a residence he was legally not allowed to be in and refused to leave. When officers arrived at the home, the suspect exited out the back door and ran from the scene.
From there, police allege they located the suspect approximately 4.5 kilometres from the residence with help from First Nation Safety Officers, RCMP Police Dog Services and the RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System unit. They then tracked the suspect through a large swamp area that was waist deep in parts until police service dog Czar and his handler caught up with him.
RCMP allege the suspect assaulted Czar, but the dog was not hurt. They arrested him and took him into custody, and further allege he resisted arrest the entire time.
The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during his interaction with the service dog. He was then transported to the RCMP detachment in Virden for processing. He is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting a peace officer x5, and failure to comply with an undertaking x2.
