The Royal Canadian Legion is marking its 100th anniversary this week, celebrating a century of supporting veterans, strengthening communities and preserving Canada’s traditions of remembrance. National events are underway in Ottawa, where Governor General Louise Arbour will take part in a commemorative ceremony at the National War Memorial, delivering remarks and laying a wreath to honour the milestone. Later in the day, Canada Post will unveil a new stamp recognizing the Legion’s founding after the First World War and its official incorporation in July 1926.
Brandon’s Branch #3 has been part of the Legion’s story since 1926
That same year, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 in Brandon was established, receiving its charter in December 1926. For nearly a century, the branch has served as a gathering place for veterans, families and community members — part of a network of more than 1,350 Legion branches across the country. Over time, the organization’s role has expanded from supporting returning soldiers to promoting public awareness of military service and sacrifice. Branches host Remembrance Day ceremonies, community events, weddings, meals and social gatherings, often acting as central hubs in smaller communities.

Legion membership continues to grow
The Legion now counts roughly 300,000 members nationwide, and membership has been rising sharply this year due to a free‑membership initiative that has already attracted 100,000 new participants. Veterans and their families make up a significant portion of the membership, though anyone is welcome to join.
As branches across Canada mark the centennial with local ceremonies and special events, partner organizations note the Legion’s ongoing importance. Support from provincial commands continues to fund programs such as pairing veterans with service dogs, and many community leaders say Legion branches remain essential in preserving Canada’s collective memory of military service.
