Portage la Prairie RCMP have arrested a 25‑year‑old Winnipeg man after a motorist reported seeing a suspect wave what appeared to be a handgun through a sunroof while driving erratically on the Trans‑Canada Highway east of Portage la Prairie.
RCMP say the incident happened around 11:50 a.m. on July 21, when the suspect’s vehicle passed another car and the driver allegedly lifted the weapon into view. Portage la Prairie officers, assisted by Amaranth RCMP, located the vehicle roughly 20 minutes later travelling west of the community. A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of the Trans‑Canada Highway and Highway 16, where the suspect was arrested without incident.
During the search of the vehicle, officers seized an airsoft replica BB handgun, which investigators say was the item displayed during the encounter on the highway.
The Winnipeg man faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon (two counts), pointing a firearm (two counts), possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, uttering threats (two counts), and common nuisance causing injury.
He was released on an undertaking, with his first court appearance scheduled for September.
