Brandon City Council has approved the street names McCrimmon Drive and Propp Place for the Bellafield development, continuing a tradition of naming roads after Wheat Kings players and builders who helped shape the franchise’s legacy. The new names join existing Bellafield streets such as Derlago Drive, Hanlon Crescent, Chipperfield Drive, Fairbairn Place, Allison Way, Ferraro Drive, Boschman Bay and Dietrich Bay.
Propp Place will honour Brian Propp, one of the most accomplished players in Wheat Kings history. Propp suited up for Brandon from 1976 to 1980 and amassed 511 points in 267 regular-season games. A member of the club’s 1978-79 WHL championship team, he was selected 14th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1979 NHL Draft and went on to record more than 1,000 career NHL points while appearing in five Stanley Cup Finals.
McCrimmon Drive recognizes the contributions of both Brad McCrimmon and Kelly McCrimmon, two of the most respected names in Brandon hockey.
Brad McCrimmon played for the Wheat Kings from 1976 to 1979 and was a cornerstone of the 1978-79 championship team. He was named WHL Defenceman of the Year before embarking on an 18-year NHL career that included nearly 1,200 games, three NHL All-Star appearances and a Stanley Cup championship with the Calgary Flames in 1989. Following his playing career, he worked as a coach and executive before his tragic death in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash.
Kelly McCrimmon’s connection to the Wheat Kings spans more than four decades. After playing for the club, he became a coach, general manager, owner and governor, helping establish Brandon as one of the Canadian Hockey League’s premier franchises. He later joined the Vegas Golden Knights organization and served as general manager during the club’s 2023 Stanley Cup championship season.
The Bellafield neighbourhood was created to commemorate former Wheat Kings whose accomplishments have brought recognition to Brandon and helped cement the city’s reputation as one of Canada’s premier hockey communities
