The latest addition to the list is a confirmed tornado near Elkhorn, where investigators have completed the storm classification but are still determining the tornado’s final EF rating.
Nationally, Canada has recorded more than 60 confirmed tornadoes this year, with activity stretching from Alberta to Ontario. Researchers note that improved storm detection and post-storm surveys have helped identify more tornadoes than would have been documented in previous decades.

A downburst differs from a tornado in that it produces intense straight-line winds rather than a rotating column of air. Both, however, can leave extensive damage to trees, buildings and power infrastructure.
With several storm investigations still underway and some ratings pending, Manitoba’s final tornado count for 2026 could climb even higher before the severe weather season comes to an end.
1991 was the most active year for severe wind events in Manitoba with 18 recorded tornadoes according to tornadopath.com.
