A 42-year-old woman from Grandview faces new charges including forgery and obstructing justice after allegedly submitted a forged doctor’s note to avoid having to appear in court.
According to Dauphin RCMP, the woman allegedly submitted a doctor’s note saying she couldn’t come to court after being seriously injured in a car crash. The note stated the crash had occurred on July 22, was submitted through her lawyer, and was initially accepted by the court, pushing back her September 2 sentencing hearing on a theft charge.
Police said a court official followed up with them and they began an investigation, in which they determined the doctor’s note was a forgery. A review of police files further confirmed no reports had been made involving the suspect being in a collision on that date in Manitoba or any other province.
The woman was re-arrested on September 1 without incident and now faces charges of obstructing justice, forgery, and uttering a forged document. None of the charges have been tested in court.
