Classrooms, lecture halls and campuses across Manitoba are buzzing with activity as students begin a new academic year.
Approximately 225,000 kindergarten to Grade 12 students are expected to attend schools across the province this year. Manitoba’s most recent enrolment report counted 224,724 students in public schools, independent schools and homeschools, continuing a trend of stable enrolment across the K-12 system.
Post-secondary institutions are also welcoming thousands of learners back. Provincial statistics show Manitoba’s colleges and universities enrol approximately 56,500 students, including 37,805 undergraduate students, 5,340 graduate students, and 13,345 college students.
In total, roughly 281,000 Manitobans are returning to classrooms, labs, workshops and campuses this fall.
Manitoba’s public post-secondary system consists of eight institutions: the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, Université de Saint-Boniface, University College of the North, Red River College Polytechnic, Assiniboine Community College and the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT).
The return to school means a busy day on roads and school routes as families, students and educators settle back into their routines. Motorists are reminded to watch for school zones, increased pedestrian traffic and school buses as thousands of students make their way to class for the first time this school year.
For many students, today marks the start of new courses, new teachers and new opportunities as Manitoba’s education system begins another year of learning.
