Westman volleyball standout Amy Gordon has made her choice to continue her career on the court in Calgary.
The Neelin Spartans’ star setter has verbally committed to the Mount Royal Cougars for next season.
"Throughout the past five months it’s literally been the #1 thing on my mind every single day and once I made it, it just felt like I literally pulled a semi off of my back," said Gordon on Tuesday, "I had a few choices, they were all kind of equal with each other and I think the one that pushed me more towards Mount Royal was the whole experience. Getting away from home and I really liked the atmosphere of the school when I went to visit there."
Gordon helped her Spartans finish runner-up at the AAAA provincials this past season while being named a tournament all-star.
The year prior, Gordon got MVP honours in leading the Spartans to the top prize at the AAAA level and the first in the program’s history.
Her high school Kevin Neufeld feels the sky’s the limit for Gordon.
"It’s a real good accomplishment for her and for sure she’s one of those difference makers and probably in the top two or three setters in Western Canada," said Neufeld. "I think she’s one of those real competitive type kids that looks forward to trying to lead her team to win a national championship and being in that kind of all-Canadian group."
Gordon was selected to the all-Manitoba team and was chosen as a graduating all-star team by Volleyball Manitoba for her solid play in her senior high school season.
She also represented her province this past summer at the Volleyball Canada National Team Challenge Cup.
Gordon’s geared up for the next step.
"I know for a fact it’s not going to be easy. I for sure had some good experiences and some high level experiences, but I don’t think anything that’s going to compare to the caliber of the CIS," said Gordon. "I think I’m going to have to get ready to work harder than I’ve ever worked because this is a whole other level and I’m going to need to compete on a whole other level to get on the court."
