– Jayce Hawryluk had two goals and an assist to pace the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 6-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Wednesday night. Brandon erupted for four unanswered second period goals after the teams were tied 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes. Eric Roy, Rene Hunter, Rihards Bukarts and Jens Meilleur also scored for Brandon while Ryan Pulock, Ryan Pilon and John Quenneville all contributed a pair of assists each. – Tyler Penner had two goals and an assist to lead the Steinbach Pistons to a 6-3 win over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines Wednesday night. Dylan Gejdos scored twice in a losing cause for Waywayseecappo. The loss guarantees the Wolverines will finish fifth in the Sher-Wood Division, and will play fourth-place OCN in the Best-of-Three first round playoff series. In the other game in the MJHL Wednesday, Nathan Park stopped 32 shots as the Selkirk Steelers beat the Portage Terriers 1-0.
– Brandon product Lisa Barclay is hoping to finish off a personal best season with a CIS Championship. Barclay was named the Canada West MVP after leading the Conference and the CIS in points per set and kills. The fourth-year left-side and the T-Birds are the #1 seed for this weekend’s CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship in Regina. They’re seeking a record-tying seventh straight title. – Brandon product Amy Lee has been honoured by the Canada West Conference with the student-athlete award in women’s hockey. Lee served as captain of the Manitoba Bisons for the past two years and a career-best 22 points during his senior season in 2013-2014. Lee has also been an academic CIS All-Canadian three times.
– The Brandon Classic Racquetball tournament that was scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. The event had low entries due to a conflict with another tournament. The Brandon Racquetball Association is still slated to the host the Provincial Junior Racquetball Championship next month.
– The Winnipeg Jets will look to continue their impressive run under coach Paul Maurice when they host Phoenix Coyotes Thursday night in their first game after the Olympic break. The Jets are 9-3-and-1 since Maurice took over from Claude Noel, and they’ve closed to within three points of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
– The Montreal Alouettes have released 12-year CFL veteran receiver Arland Bruce just two weeks after he was fined for making homophobic comments. Montreal did not specify why Bruce was released. However, the move comes two days after the Alouettes hired new head coach Tom Higgins.
– The Toronto Blue Jays opened their Grapefruit League season with a rain-shortened 4-3 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. Jose Bautista hit a long home run for the Blue Jays in the first inning.
