– The Brandon ‘AAA’ Midget Wheat Kings completed a specialty teams comeback Friday night. The Wheat Kings scored five times on a five minute man advantage to rally past the Eastman Selects 6-3 to win the opening the game of their league semifinal. Ty Lewis fired a hat-trick and Tanner Kaspick picked up five assists for the Wheat Kings, who head to Beausejour for Game #2 of the best-of-five series on Sunday afternoon.
– The Virden Oil Capitals got two goals from Artsiom Kalashnikov in a 5-4 shootout loss against the Swan Valley Stampeders Friday night. The Oil Caps dropped 10 of 14 games in February and have lost four straight overall. In other MJHL action, Jaret Smith scored the shootout winner as the Neepawa Natives edged the Dauphin Kings 3-2.
– Brandon product Lisa Barclay and her UBC Thunderbirds have advanced at the CIS national women’s volleyball championship. Barclay had a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs as the top-seeded T-Birds knocked off the host Regina Cougars in four sets in Friday night’s quarter-final. Meanwhile, Souris-born Rick Scott and his Dalhousie Tigers pulled off an upset with a four-set victory over the third-seeded Trinity Western Spartans. Coach Scott and his Tigers meet the Manitoba Bisons in one semifinal while Barclay and the T-Birds take on the Laval Rouge et Or in the other semifinal.
– Carberry’s Braden Calvert split his two games Friday at the World Junior Men’s Curling Championship. The Canadians scored three in the seventh end to beat China 8-4 and bounce back from a 10-5 loss to Scotland earlier in the day. Calvert and crew now have a record of 2-3.
– The Wheat City is welcoming Olympic curling champion Kaitlyn Lawes next month. The third for Jennifer Jones is coming to Brandon on Monday, March 10th. She’ll be visiting students at Meadows School and then will have a meet-and-greet at Source for Sports at 3:30 p.m.
