The Brandon Wheat Kings salvaged a point on the road in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night.
The Blades jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period after a broken play led to a loose puck behind the net. Former Wheat King Braylon Shmyr sent the puck in front and it went off Kale Clague and in.
In the 2nd period, the Blades would make it 2-0 when Caleb Fantillo grabbed a rebound and buried his 4th of the year.
The Blades would outshoot Brandon 30-29 thru 40 minutes.
Brandon would find some momentum in the third period on the powerplay as Stelio Mattheos found a loose puck in the slot and fired home his 16th of the season.
Then with the extra attacker on, Tanner Kaspick took a feed from Tyler Coulter and buried the game tying goal with 1:03 left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams had opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Shots were 5-4 Brandon in the overtime period.
In the shootout the Blades got goals from Jesse Shynkaruk and Josh Paterson while Logan Flodell stopped 4/5 for the victory.
Logan Thompson made 3/5 saves in the shootout to follow up a 32 save performance thru 65 minutes.
The shootout loss was just the first for the Wheat Kings this season. They came into the night with a perfect 5-0 record.
The extra point pickup keeps the Wheat Kings five points ahead of the Blades for the top Eastern Conference Wildcard spot.
Brandon will need a short memory as they return home to host Medicine Hat tonight (Saturday.) Game time at Westman Place is 7:30, the CKLQ pre-game show hits the air at 7:00.
