Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – The Lethbridge Hurricanes scored five powerplay goals on route to an 8-4 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.
It was a tough start for the Wheat Kings as the Hurricanes opened the scoring just 0:38 seconds into the hockey game. After Ty Thorpe rushed the puck into the ‘Canes end for a scoring chance, the Jake Elmer turned around and snapped one past Jiri Patera to go up 1-0.
Brandon quickly responded, moments after a thunderous bodycheck along the Lethbridge bench, Ridly Greig found a rebound and buried his 4th of the year.
‘Canes captain Jordy Bellerive put his team back in front just a few moments later as he beat Patera for his 10th of the year. The Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick wasn’t done there as he set up Dylan Cozens on a 4 on 3 powerplay late in the period to open up a two-goal lead at the intermission.
The second period saw a plethora of powerplay goals with the Hurricanes getting the edge with a pair. Dylan Cozens and Ty Kolle scored for Lethbridge with Stelio Mattheos reaching the 20 goal mark on the powerplay for Brandon.
The Hurricanes outshot Brandon 20-12 in the middle frame and lead 5-2 heading to the locker room.
The goals just kept coming in the third period for the Hurricanes as they fired three more into the Brandon net to earn the 8-4 victory and improve to 2-1 on this mini, four-game East Division road trip.
Dylan Cozens finished the night with 3 goals and 3 assists for six points while Brandon’s own Calen Addison quietly picked up five assists on the night.
Stelio Mattheos scored twice for Brandon who also got a goal from Connor Gutenberg.
Jiri Patera was pulled after the first period, he allowed three goals on 16 shots. Ethan Kruger stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced in the final forty minutes.
At the other end, Carl Tetachuk picked up his second consecutive win over the Wheat Kings, stopping 30 shots.
Brandon will look to hit the reset button on Wednesday night when they head to Swift Current to take on the Broncos. (7:00 MB time on QCountry Radio.)
