The Pembina Valley Hawks are on the road this weekend looking to punch their ticket to the Esso Cup.
The Hawks are going up against the Weyburn Gold Wings in the best-of-three Western Regional with the winner advancing to nationals.
"We’re at the top of our game right now, we’ve got lots of confidence, and every girl is going. We got three lines and we just roll them," captain Lauryn Keen told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston. "You can’t really shorten your bench in games like this because they’re so intense. It could be three games in a row and you just got to keep rolling with what you got and get everybody going and everybody confident."
The Hawks completed a major comeback to get to regionals after rallying from a two games to none series deficit to defeat the Westman Wildcats in the best-of-five Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League final.
"It’s a best-of-three series so you don’t have as many chances. Even if you do lose the first one, we’ve come back from down two before, there’s no reason why we can’t do it again," said Keen." I think that probably just gives the girls some extra confidence knowing that we have a lot of a character and heart on our team that we can comeback from anything now.
The 2014 Esso Cup is running April 20th to 26th in Hamilton and Stoney Creek, Ontario with Pembina Valley having captured the Canadian title two years ago.
"That has been our ultimate goal throughout the season," added Keen. "Winning this league championship has just been the first step and we hope to just keep going and eventually make it to the Esso Cup and win the Esso Cup, that be awesome."
