Former Brandon Wheat Kings’ co-captain Brayden Schenn made a stop on this week’s edition of Monday Sports Talk on CKLQ.
The Philadelphia Flyers’ forward is enjoying a fine season, putting up the best offensive numbers of his three-year NHL career by producing 20 goals and 41 points in 78 games this season.
"Growing up as a kid it’s obviously trying to get drafted into the Western Hockey League and that happened and I got a good opportunity in Brandon. Played with some good teammates and made the most of the opportunity there and now living the dream in the NHL, it’s obviously unbelievable," said Schenn. "Going to the rink every day, being part of the Flyer organization and playing with my brother (Luke). It all goes together and it’s pretty cool and pretty special."
Schenn’s production has helped the Flyers rebound from a slow start to become a solid playoff team, sitting in sixth-place in the Eastern Conference going into the final week of the regular season.
The 22-year old also getting a chance to be teammates with older brother Luke, who is in his second season with Philadelphia.
"We were pretty tight to begin with and had a real good relationship," said Schenn, "Now, we just drive to rink every day with each other, practice together and play together. It’s pretty cool for us along with the family."
Schenn was selected by the Los Angeles Kings fifth overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, but was dealt to Philadelphia as part of a trade in June 23, 2011 that saw Mike Richards sent to the Kings.
Schenn is in the final year of his entry-level contract, and is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st.
Here’s Schenn’s conversation with CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston and Lanny Stewart from Monday Sports Talk…
