– The Brandon Wheat Kings will try to extend their 2014 post-season again on Friday night when they visit the Edmonton Oil Kings in Game Five of their Eastern Conference semifinal. After winning game four on home-ice Wednesday, the Wheat Kings need another victory tonight to send the series back to Brandon for GameSsix. – Michael Hutchinson made 32 saves for his first career win in his second NHL start as the Winnipeg Jets rallied past the Boston Bruins 2-1 in a shootout in their final home game of the season. Evander Kane tied it with under two minutes to go in the third period while Bryan Little got the shootout winner.
– Brendan Shanahan has been hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ president and alternate governor. Shanahan had been serving as the NHL’s director of player safety since 2011. The 45-year-old played 1,524 career games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year.
– A buzzer-beater has eliminated Virden product Bryn Chyzyk and the University of North Dakota from the NCAA Frozen Four in Philadelphia. Chyzyk and UND fell 2-1 against the top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers in Thursday night’s semifinal with the game-winning goal coming shorthanded with sixth-tenths of a second left in regulation.
– Three Westman high school stars have signed CIS deals. The Virden Golden Bear duo of Logan Biccum and Natalie Vachon have committed to the Brandon University women’s basketball team while Neelin Spartans’ standout Emma Ciprick is joining the Dalhousie Tigers women’s volleyball team.
– Pilot Mound’s Prairie Hill MX track is riding into new territory. A newly formed professional motocross team will call the track home this season and compete on the Canadian circuit for the first time this summer. Prairie Hill MX began hosting amateur races in 2009 and has been named track of the year twice by the Manitoba Motocross Association.
– The Toronto Blue Jays fell back to the .500 mark by dropping a 6-4 decision against Houston. R.A. Dickey took the loss for Toronto, giving up five runs and six hits over seven innings. Colby Rasmus hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who are are 5-5 on the MLB season.
– Bill Haas fired a 4-under 68 and holds the lead following the opening round at the Masters with defending champion Adam Scott one shot back. Canadian Mike Weir shot a 1-over 73 while Weyburn’s Graham Delaet struggled to an 80.
