The quest for Lord Stanley’s mug starts this week with Brandon product Matt Calvert and his Columbus Blue Jackets among the 16 teams in the running for the top prize.
Calvert’s last post-season game was serving as co-captain of his hometown Wheat Kings in the 2010 Memorial Cup final.
"This is my fourth year professional and I think the first three years I never played one playoff game. It’s been a while, since junior hockey since I played a playoff hockey game. Obviously playing in the NHL playoffs is another step," Calvert said on CKLQ’s Monday Sports Talk this week, "It’s something you grow up watching as a kid and you dream of your whole life. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m going to try to take in every moment and enjoy it."
Calvert collected nine goals and 24 points in 56 games to help Columbus clinch a playoff spot for only the second time in franchise history while establishing club records for wins and points during the regular season.
The Blue Jackets face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round, with the Eastern Conference quarter-final starting on Wednesday night.
Calvert and crew dropped all five head-to-head meetings against the Pens’ during the regular season.
"I think we know what it’s going to take for us to beat them," said Calvert. "They’re a skilled, talented team, they’ve got experience in the playoffs, but we’re young, we’re hungry and we play a tenacious style of hockey and that’s something that’s going to benefit us. We just got to work on shutting those guys down and pretty much worrying about ourselves after that and hopefully we’ll be successful."
