The Winnipeg Blues are the 2014 Turnbull Cup Champions.
The Blues completed an unexpected run to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League title on Tuesday night with a 5-1 victory over the Dauphin Kings, winning the Best-of-Seven League Final four games to one.
Kamerin Bault had two goals and an assist in Tuesday’s decisive game while Byron Spriggs made 24 saves in the Blues’ net before a crowd of about 1,100 at the MTS IcePlex in Winnipeg.
"It was special to win at home," said Blues’ GM/Coach Don MacGillivray after the game, "I was nice for our players to win a championship in front of their friends and family. It will be something they’ll remember for a very long time. Winning a championship is always a great feeling."
The Blues finished fourth in the Addison Division during the regular season with a 31-23-6 record but got hot at the right time and cruised through the post-season by winning 14 of the 17 games they played.
Spriggs was named the Playoff MVP after going 14-3 with a 1.67 goals against average and .943 save percentage in the post-season.
Both finalists will take a few days off before preparations begin for the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup later this month in Dauphin.
The event begins a week from Saturday at Credit Union Place.
