The Brandon University men’s basketball team has gone to the West Coast to land their first recruit for the upcoming Canada West season in 6-foot-7 forward Ryan Cowley.
"I think he’ll have a solid five years. He’s physical, gets up and down the court. It’ll take some time to transition from high school to the CIS level, just like any other sport or any other athlete really. We’re excited to sign him and he’s a great kid," coach Gil Cheung told CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston.
"Playing university basketball has been a dream of mine since I was young," Cowley told gobobcats.ca. "I can see myself playing at a university level, which is an honour because it will be such a valuable experience and not everyone has this opportunity."
Cowley averaged a double-double in his senior season with the Delta Secondary School Pacers with 18.1 points and 11.2 rebounds per-game.
He was also in the national spotlight in August, while playing with the B.C. basketball team at the Canada Summer Games.
"In basketball we talk about having a high motor. His motor does not stop, he plays hard every second he’s out there," said Cheung. "He’s a true post player, he likes to bang. He can stretch you out a little bit. He loves contact, a character kid, organized and I think he’ll have an impact here at Brandon University."
"I chose to play for Brandon mostly because of coach Cheung," said Cowley. "He’s very personable and a likeable coach. The opportunity to get a lot of playing time and develop my game on and off the court is something I am really looking forward to."
The Bobcats welcome in Cowley, but lose Jordan Reaves, Emerick Ravier, James Elias and Isaiah James to graduation.
