A double dose of red, white and blue has been added to the recruiting class for the Brandon University women’s basketball team.
Mikaela Stanton from California and Alyssa Montgomery from Maryland are newcomers to the program for next fall along with Virden Golden Bear standouts Logan Biccum and Natalie Vachon and Hamiota Huskie star Shayna Mathison.
"They can do some damage, I’m hoping that’s the situation," said BU coach Novell Thomas, "I’ve told them that they’re coming in here to score the ball and we defend first and we score second. I think that they’re on board for that and they’re excited."
Stanton is a 5-foot-4 guard, who averaged 16.7 points per-game last year while Montgomery is a 5-foot-11 forward with the duo coming off seasons in the college ranks.
"I think Mikaela will give us another three-point threat. She’s very experienced at playing an up tempo style, which is great because we’re going to be pushing that ball a little bit more this year, " added Thomas. "Alyssa is a perimeter and post player. We’ll move her around depending on how the other teams match up with her. She’s very explosive, very strong going to the basket. She can shoot and the three as well."
Stanton and Montgomery join fellow American Aleah Bridges as imports on the BU roster, with Canada West first-team all-star and CIS leading scorer Cassie Cooke not returning.
"If one of them can get close to where Cassie was and then the other one be right behind, that’s exactly what we’re looking for and what we need," said Thomas.
