It’s the last hurrah for Corbin Boes in the Western Hockey League, and he wants to go out by hoisting the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
The former Brandon Wheat Kings’ goaltender took over as Portland’s #1 goaltender midway through their Western Conference Final with the Kelowna Rockets, posting a 4-and-0 record with a 1.84 goals against average and .941 save percentage.
Boes joined the Winterhawks in a January deal with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, whom had acquired him from Brandon a year ago during the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.
"Obviously, being the last year in the league and looking back a few months ago, I never would have thought I’d get this opportunity," said Boes on CKLQ’s Monday Sports Talk this week, "Then the trade happened and we’ve been rolling through the playoffs. It’s been a pretty surreal turn of events."
Boes took over for the struggling Brendan Burke during the Western Conference Final, but wasn’t 100 per cent sure he’d be the one between the pipes when the WHL Final opened Saturday in Portland.
Regardless, the Saskatoon product says it’s business as usual for him.
"I don’t know, officially, if I’ll get the call or not," said Boes, "I don’t think anything changes for me. I need to have a good practice week this week and we’ll see what happens come Saturday."
Portland host the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday and Sunday in the opening two games of the WHL Championship series.
It’s the third straight year the two teams have met for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
Here’s Boes’ full conversation with CKLQ’s Tyler Crayston and Lanny Stewart from this week’s edition of Monday Sports Talk…
