– The Dauphin Kings have three straight wins to open the RBC Cup National Junior ‘A’ Hockey Championship. Brandonite Brayden Cuthbert was among the goal scorers for Dauphin in their 5-2 victory against the host Vernon Vipers. Killarney’s Jesse Bernard picked up an assist for his team-leading fourth point of the tournament for the Kings, who have secured a spot in Saturday’s semifinal. – The final piece of the Memorial Cup puzzle is in place. Val-d’Or beat Baie-Comeau 4-3 in the seventh and deciding game to crown the QMJHL champion with Anthony Mantha scoring in the final minute. Val-d’Or joins the host London Knights, Edmonton Oil Kings and Guelph Storm at the tournament, which begins this weekend.
– Mike Williamson has landed a new coaching assignment with the Tri-City Americans after being let go by the Calgary Hitmen. Williamson spent the past five seasons with Calgary, and led the Hitmen to a WHL championship in 2010. Calgary, Saskatoon and Vancouver are still on the lookout for new head coaches.
– The WHL player of the week is Edmonton Oil Kings’ forward Edgars Kulda. He had four goals, seven points and plus-two rating in five games last week as Edmonton captured the league championship against the Portland Winterhawks.
– The comeback is complete for the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves as the New York Rangers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1. Brian Boyle and Brad Richards had the goals for the New York, who rallied from a 3-1 series deficit for the first time in the franchise’s 88-year history.
– The Chicago Blackhawks are moving on to the Western Conference Final. Patrick Kane had the overtime winner as the Hawks downed the Minnesota Wild 2-1 to take the series in six games. Kris Versteeg had the other goal for the Hawks, while Corey Crawford made 34 saves for Chicago.
– Kirk Muller wasn’t out of work for long. Just one week after being fired as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, Muller is back behind the bench with the St. Louis Blues as an assistant.
– CFL teams were on the clock Tuesday night with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers selecting Simon Fraser O-lineman Matthias Goossen with the second overall pick. The Calgary Stampeders swung a deal with the expansion Ottawa Redblacks to get the top pick in the draft and chose centre Pierre Lavertu of Laval. The Redblacks also traded veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn to the B.C. Lions.
– The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed veteran linebacker Ejiro Kuale. The five-year CFL veteran is a two-time Grey Cup champion.
– The first-place Souris Sabres improved to 6-0 in the Westman High School Rugby League. Michael Fortin scored a try and Brendan Roberts had a penalty kick for the Sabres, who got past the Crocus Plainsmen 8-5 in varsity boys’ action.
– The Vincent Massey Vikings blanked the Neelin Spartans 3-0 in the Brandon High School Soccer League. Allison Cruise had a pair of goals for the Vikings, while Jessi Coulter and Nimrit Bath combined for the shutout.
– Sydney Cobbe tossed four innings of shutout ball as the Vincent Massey Vikings blanked the Crocus Plainsmen 17-0 in the Brandon High School Girls Fastball League. Brittany Stonehouse went 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Vikings, who have clinched first-place in the standings and host the Neelin Spartans on Thursday for the city championship.
– Juan Francisco hit his sixth home run and chipped in with an RBI double as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4.
