– The Brandon University men’s basketball team has signed their second recruit for the 2014-2015 Canada West season with the addition of 6-foot-4 guard Denham Buchanan of Toronto. Buchanan spent 2012-2013 with the OUA’s Waterloo Warriors, but missed all of last season with injury. He’s joins B.C. product Ryan Cowley as newcomers to BU this fall.
– The Brandon ‘AAA’ Midget Wheat Kings didn’t have to look far to find their new head coach. Tyson Ramsey has been appointed the role after serving as an assistant for the past three years under Ken Schneider who stepped down. The Wheat Kings finished in top spot in the regular season standings, before falling in the league semifinals this past year.
– The return of Russell product Derek Falloon got the Yorkton Terriers back on track at the RBC Cup. Falloon was back in the lineup after being sidelined with a concussion and helped the team to a much-needed 3-1 victory against the Carleton Place Canadians. Yorkton has a record of 1-2 going into the final day of round-robin play and are facing the Dauphin Kings. The first-place Kings are 3-0 and have clinched a spot in Saturday’s semifinal.
– The Montreal Canadiens are moving on to the Eastern Conference after eliminating their longtime rival the Boston Bruins in Game 7. Carey Price made 29 saves and Daniel Briere had a goal and an assist in the Habs’ 3-1 win. Max Pacioretty and Dale Weise had the other goals for Montreal, who are going up against the New York Rangers in the conference final.
– The LA Kings have forced Game 7 in their second round series against the Anaheim Ducks with a 2-1 victory. Jonathan Quick turned aside 21 shots, while Trevor Lewis and Jake Muzzin did the goal scoring for the Kings. The Chicago Blackhawks await the winner in the Western Conference Final.
– The Vincent Massey Vikings have struck first in their best-of-three city high school baseball championship against the Crocus Plainsmen. Clark Whelpton gave up two hits and struck out eight over five innings of work in leading the Vikings to an 11-1 victory. Jordan Stallard led the way offensively for Vincent Massey, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.
– Wyatt Kalynuk tossed a complete-game seven-hit shutout as the Virden Golden Bears downed the Deloraine/Hartney Colts 7-1 in the Prairie West High School Baseball League. Marc Fleury had a two-run homer for the Bears, who improved their record to 4-0.
– Elton Sabres’ star Courtney Fines is going across the border. She’ll be playing basketball and potentially softball with the Lake Region State College Royals in Devils Lake. Fines had a standout senior year with the Sabres, being named tournament MVP in leading her volleyball team to a two ‘A’ provincial championship. She also earned the players’ choice award at the basketball championships.
