– The Guelph Storm ran the table in the round-robin at the 2014 Memorial Cup. Winnipeg Jets’ draft pick Scott Kosmachuk scored a hat-trick as Guelph eliminated the host London Knights with a 7-2 win. The Storm are 3-0 and will be in Sunday’s championship game. The Edmonton Oil Kings and Val-d’Or Foreurs are facing off in the semifinal on Friday night.
– Newly appointed Philadelphia Flyers’ GM Ron Hextall has a game plan in place for the off-season. Hextall told Comcast Sportsnet, that re-signing former Wheat Kings’ co-captain Brayden Schenn is at the top of his to-do list. Schenn scored a career-high 20 goals and 41 points in 82 games this season.
– The LA Kings stormed back to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 and tie the Western Conference Final at ones. Jeff Carter had a third period hat-trick, while his Kings scored six straight goals. The Kings are hosting Game 3 on Saturday.
– Winnipeg Jets’ defenceman Jacob Trouba is no longer wearing red, white and blue. Team USA sent Trouba back to Winnipeg as a pre-caution after suffering a minor neck injury at the World Championship. Trouba was sidelined 18 games with a neck injury during his rookie season with the Jets, where he tallied 10 goals and 29 points over 65 games.
– The Souris Sabres are a step closer to repeating in the Westman High School Rugby League. Nathan Greig, Michael Fortin and Tyson McRae each scored a try for Souris who downed the Crocus Plainsmen 27-7 in the boys’ semifinal. On the girls’ side, Kristen Kirkpatrick and Kaylee Butterfield had two tries apiece as the Sabres shut down the Swan Valley Tigers 34-0. The Sabres now welcome the Minnedosa Chancellors on Saturday in the championship games.
– The Vincent Massey Vikings are city high school baseball champions. Jordy Stallard went 4-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs to lead the Vikings to a 20-2 victory over the Crocus Plainsmen. Mitchell Lyall gave up one run and struck out five in four innings to pick up the win for Massey, who sweep the best-of-three series.
– The Pilot Mound Pilots have punched their ticket for the provincial high school baseball championship. The Pilots won Zone 6 by beating Baldur/Cartwright 6-4, behind three hits and 2 RBIs from Will Lovell. Brad McLeod worked six innings for Pilot Mound, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out eight. The Pilots will be in Brandon for the playdowns next week.
– The top players in the Rural Manitoba High School Football League are off to Winnipeg this weekend to close out their season in style. The RMFL’s league’s first annual all-star game is set for Saturday, showcasing both graduating and young players. Kick off is set for 11 a.m. at Investors Group Field on Saturday. – There was no letting up for the San Antonio Spurs. Tony Parker had 22 points, while Danny Green hit seven three-pointers and added 21, and the Spurs rolled to a 112-77 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. San Antonio leads the NBA’s Western Conference Final two games to none.
– Brandon’s Kurtis Cullen has been knocked out of the main draw at the Canadian Racquetball Championship. Cullen lost in straight sets in the Round of 16 on Wednesday in the men’s singles division and drops down to the consolation side.
– Edwin Encarnacion had two homers for the second straight game, as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4.
