Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is phasing out its enhanced identification cards by summer 2022.
The cards were introduced in 2009 as a cheaper alternative to passports. They were easy to carry, and were meant for short land trips across the U-S border.
MPI spokesperson Brian Smiley says the cards never really caught on, and over the years as fewer people were buying them, the program has become too expensive.
He says they currently have about 10,500 card holders.
Smiley says the enhanced ID cards have a lot of competition from passports and other documents such as the FAST Card or NEXUS Card.
