The City of Brandon has a tender out for proposals to do a feasibility study into an outdoor aquatics complex.
According to the city’s website – proposals would examine everything involving a water park – its cost, location, water and sewer hook-ups, drainage, also its features and amenities – and whether we even want one in the first place. The city does recognize its one outdoor pool and 5 spray parks are inadequate for a city of Brandon’s size.
One of the documents reads “City residents often report traveling to surrounding communities to find quality outdoor aquatic facilities in the summer months. The City has an opportunity to replace its underperforming pool with an upgraded outdoor aquatics complex that will serve as a destination within Brandon and beyond.”
In 2019, Brandon’s ‘Recreation and Community Facilities Master Plan’ included a goal of building an outdoor aquatics complex, but there was no firm date for opening such a facility – the timeline was between 2025 and 2029.
Last year, a group of residents called for a destination water park to be built at 13th Street and Richmond Avenue on the Keystone Centre grounds, and even began collecting donations to cover the cost of construction.
Submissions for the request for proposals close at 5:00 pm on July 6th.
