It wasn’t a Picasso by any stretch of the imagination, but the Brandon Wheat Kings managed to find a way to earn two-points on Saturday night, beating Prince Albert 5-4 in overtime.
Braden Schneider was once again the OT hero, scoring the game winner vs his hometown team midway though the extra frame.
“We knew this was going to be a gritty, hard fought game,” said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. “When they got three goals, we had some frustration on the bench. We had to settle the guys down, and focus our energy the right way.”
Lynden McCallum scored twice on the powerplay, and Ben McCartney added a PP marker of his own to help Brandon finish the night 3/4 on the man advantage. Brett Hyland rounded out the scoring for Brandon, who only took two minor penalties all night.
Down 4-3 late in the game, the duo of McCartney and Ridly Greig connected on a perfect passing play to send the game to the extra fram. McCartney’s two point night extends his streak to eight games.
“We have some game breakers that mean we are never out of a game,” added MacGillivray. “I thought we did a real nice job in the final eight minutes. Our guys like to win, they are a competative group and that’s been the key for our team. Our leadership group has been outstanding.”
The win officially eliminates Saskatoon from contention when it comes to winning the East Division. The Wheat Kings control their own fate on Sunday. A win vs the Regina Pats would earn them the East Division title and crown them Subway Cup Champions.
Game time Sunday night is 9:00 (8:30 pre-game on Q Country Radio)
